Governor Huckabee told a convention of prison officials that he supports alternatives to prison for nonviolent offenders. Huckabee says the move is needed to rein in prison costs. Huckabee says it costs $42.59 a day to house someone in prison but just $1.85 a day to keep him in a community correction program. Huckabee spoke to about 250 prison officials gathered in Hot Springs for a meeting of the Southern State Correctional Association. Arkansas' prisons are at capacity, holding about 12,000 inmates, while another 1400 inmates are in county jails, awaiting transfers to prison as space opens up. With those numbers growing, Huckabee said recent funding for expanding Arkansas' drug courts and other alternative-sentencing programs will save money and reduce the overcrowding. |
