A 37-year-old Boyle County, Ky., Detention Center inmate died early Monday morning at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center from a heart-related illness, Boyle County Deputy Coroner Mike Wilder said. Marvin W. 'Marty' Smith of Lisa Avenue had become ill at the jail over the weekend and was taken Sunday by Boyle County Emergency Medical Services ambulance to the hospital, where he died about 16 hours later, Boyle County Jailer Barry Harmon said. The time of death was shortly before 3 a.m. Monday, Wilder said. A preliminary report on an autopsy performed Monday by the state medical examiner's office indicated that Smith died of 'numerous cardiac-related problems,' Wilder said. Smith was brought to the jail on June 30 after being arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants and a charge of possession of marijuana, Harmon said. He also was being held on a felony fugitive warrant from Illinois authorities for a parole violation. Illinois authorities were scheduled to pick up Smith on Sunday but did not show up or call, Harmon said. |
