Judge Jails Former Prison Officer

A federal judge has sentenced a former Philadelphia jail officer to two and a-half years in prison for beating an inmate who was caught trying to flush marijuana down a toilet.
Prosecutors say the prisoner, a member of a violent drug gang, needed 19 stitches to close cuts in his scalp and face after Reginald Steptoe punched him repeatedly with the metal edge of a set of handcuffs.
The incident occurred at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia.
Steptoe was one of two officers convicted of violating Donti Hunter's civil rights in the March 1999 altercation. The jail's former deputy warden, Glen Guadalupe, was convicted of one count of obstruction of justice for covering up the attack.
Steptoe sobbed during his sentencing, and begged the judge to do something to help his fellow officers, who he said were under tremendous pressure and sometimes unable to adequately deal with violent inmates.
