A former Baton Rouge, La. juvenile detention center officer was sentenced Tuesday to two years behind bars for sexual conduct with incarcerated girls. Timothy Carter, 35, pleaded guilty earlier this year to two counts of molestation of a juvenile and a count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Carter has been in custody since his arrest in June 2002. State District Judge Bonnie Jackson gave Carter credit on his sentence for the 18 months he's spent in Parish Prison. Jackson also sentenced Carter to five-years probation after he is released. Carter's attorney, Lennie Perez, declined to comment after the hearing. Carter had been booked with five counts of molestation of a juvenile and three counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Police have said Carter had consensual sex with two 16-year-old female prisoners in the detention center, forced another girl to perform oral sex and gave one of the girls a tablet of the club drug Ecstasy. One of the girls reported the allegations to her probation officer, which led to the investigation, police said. Jackson said she considers the case "very troubling" because it involved immature girls who were incarcerated and probably didn't know how to handle Carter's sexual advances. Jackson said she doesn't know what long-term effects the crimes will have on the girls, but is sure they are embarrassed and must have endured some degree of alienation from their families. Rodger Aucoin, director of Juvenile Services, has said overcrowding sometimes forces his office to keep boys in the girls' dormitories at the detention center. When that happens, male officers are allowed in the girl dormitory area, but rules are in place to help keep them from being alone with female inmates. Aucoin said Carter must have found a way around those procedures. |
