Investigators are seeking to determine how illegal drugs were delivered to the Sebastian County Adult Detention Center disguised as mail from a lawyer to an inmate. According to a Sheriff's Office report, on July 10 deputies at the jail reported noticing an odor of tobacco emanating from an inmate's mail and turned the mail over to investigators with the Sheriff's Office. The mail had not yet been given to the inmate when jailers noticed the odor. After obtaining a search warrant, investigators opened two envelopes addressed to the inmate and found 20 tobacco cigarettes in one envelope and six hand-rolled marijuana cigarettes in the other envelope. Also in the envelope with the marijuana cigarettes was a small plastic bag containing an unidentified white powdery substance, Maj. Steve Creek said. The envelopes appear to have come from a lawyer's office, Creek said. The lawyer whose name appears on the envelopes is not the inmate's attorney of record. Investigators do not know whether the lawyer had any involvement in or knowledge of the incident, Creek said. He said he did not want to release the attorney's name until investigators have more information. The envelopes and their contents have been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory in Little Rock to be examined for evidence that may help investigators identify the person or persons responsible, Creek said. The Crime Lab also will seek to determine what the white powdery substance is, he said. Furnishing prohibited articles to a county jail inmate is a felony offense. |
