N.Y. Probation Officers are Armed Under New Policy
By Associated Press

Nearly 300 probation officers reportedly began carrying handguns this year under a new policy intended to protect officers as they increasingly visit ex-convicts in their homes and neighborhoods.
Probation Commissioner Martin Horn decided last year to change the department's policy on weapons, which used to allow only a handful of officers to carry guns on the job, The New York Times reported August 7.
''You can't very well ask people to go out in the communities, supervise probationers, arrest probationers, and not give them the tools to do the job,'' Horn told the Times.
Since the new policy went into effect about six months ago, 298 officers began carrying the 9-millimeter pistols, and 550 officers will eventually be authorized to carry them, Jack Ryan, a spokesman for the probation department, told the Times.
Officers must pass a psychological exam and complete a safety course to be permitted to carry the weapons.
