Construction of Vermont's newest prison is almost complete and Corrections Department officials are getting ready to hire the staff needed to open the facility as scheduled in October. About a dozen Corrections Department officials are already at work in the new, 350-bed, medium-security prison. Some of the 135 employees who will staff the facility have already been hired but officials are still hoping to hire 60 new correctional officers. A hiring event is scheduled at Springfield High School on Tuesday, Aug. 12. ''That day (Aug. 12) is our day to put closure on the large amount of people from this area who want to work here,'' said Assistant Superintendent David Bovat. ''We don't want to have people filter in. We want to get our cadre established and trained.'' Superintendent Keith Tallon said correctional officers would have to go through a five-week training course. Although the training usually takes place in Pittsford, the Springfield facility would host the five-week training course beginning on Sept. 1, Tallon said. The onsite training will make workers familiar with the prison, he said. ''They're going to get a lot of practical learning during the course of the five weeks. We can use the building for training purposes. It's like a practical laboratory experience. That's a wonderful opportunity,'' Tallon said. Construction on the prison, which is located off Route 11 near Interstate 91, began in October 2001. |
