A female inmate used a bra to hang herself until dead at the Fairfield County, Ohio, Jail on Sunday. Moselle Lynn Redwine, 44, London, was found hanging from a shower curtain rod at 1:40 p.m. Sunday. A bra was used as a rope, and deputies found a suicide note, said Fairfield County Sheriff Dave Phalen. Phalen said there were no prior suicidal indications by Redwine, and she was not on any type of suicide watch. 'It's unfortunate, and we hate to see these kinds of things happen,' Phalen said. 'But sometimes it's hard when sometimes someone makes their mind up to do something like this, and we don't have any warning.' The last suicide to happen at Fairfield County Jail was by a male inmate in June 1996. Phalen could not say how long Redwine was alone and hanging from the shower curtain rod. The female inmates are confined to a commons area that is connected to the shower stall. Interviews of jail employees and inmates were still being conducted Sunday night. Initial reports suggest there was no negligence on the part of deputies or involvement by fellow inmates, Phalen said. Jail personnel were notified by a female inmate that Redwine was attempting to hang herself. Employees immediately entered the cell area, cut Redwine down from the shower curtain rod and contacted the Lancaster Fire Department. The Fairfield County Sheriff's Office has jurisdiction over the investigation, but Phalen asked the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation to take over. The Fairfield County Coroner's Office also is investigating. Staffing levels at the jail were normal for a Sunday afternoon, Phalen said. There were three deputies and a sergeant on duty when the apparent suicide happened. Redwine was arrested Aug. 5 by the State Highway Patrol and was being held for receiving stolen property, a fifth degree felony, possession of drug abuse instruments, a second degree misdemeanor, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a fourth degree misdemeanor. She was arrested with Howard J. Whited, 41, also of London, in Lancaster with nearly 170 boxes of stolen over-the-counter medications, including Advil, Tylenol, Claritin and more. Redwine was taken to Fairfield Medical Center after her arrest Aug. 5, complaining of medical problems, and was unable to attend an arraignment hearing Aug. 6, remaining in her jail cell because of illness. The maximum penalty Redwine faced for the felony charges was one year in prison and a $2,500 fine. |
