An inmate was found hanging in a cell by jail officials at Victor Valley Jail about 7:30 p.m., said Chip Patterson, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokesman. The Sheriff's Department's Homicide Division was called out to the jail to investigate the death as a standard procedure, said Patterson. Inmate deaths in the jail cells occur 'once in a while,' Patterson said. 'We're mandated by law to make regular checks of the cells, and we're very diligent about that,' Patterson said. The Victor Valley is one of the busiest Type 1, or county, jails in San Bernardino County with an average daily inmate population of 95. The jail has booked over 9,600 people and has processed more than 14,500 inmates through the court system. As of press time, it was unknown how the hanging occurred and if the man was alone in his cell. In a similar instance, an inmate died by hanging at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga in January. A detention center employee found the inmate hanging from a metal frame cabinet in a storage room, where the inmate had been working alone. The inmate had been arrested for narcotics violations and had been in custody since August 2002. |
