| Calif. correctional facility inmate found dead in his jail cell |

An inmate at Wayne Brown Correctional Facility was found dead in his cell early Tuesday morning. Dennis Rene Garcia, 49, of Grass Valley, was booked into the jail at 6:08 p.m. Monday to serve a 14-day court sentence for a 'driving under the influence of alcohol' conviction, according to the Nevada County, Calif., Sheriff's Office. He was found about 5 a.m. when a correctional officer entered the cell to serve breakfast. The sheriff's office stated Garcia was alone and did not request assistance during his 11 hours in custody, nor did any other inmates hear him ask for help or indicate he was in distress. Garcia was housed in the medical unit at Wayne Brown because of recent leg surgery related to an injury that occurred while not in custody, according to the sheriff's office. He did not complain of pain or any other health issues when interviewed by medical staff at his booking, the sheriff's office stated. He was receiving doctor-prescribed medications, administered by the jail's medical staff. The coroner is investigating the cause and manner of death. |
