N.C. juvenile justice officials will hold a series of public hearings as they develop plans to replace aging juvenile prisons. The state Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention announced that it will hold four hearings in September and October across the state. The hearings will be held in Asheville, Greenville, Winston-Salem and Southern Pines. 'These community meetings will give North Carolina citizens an opportunity to participate in structured brainstorming sessions in which their input will help us make the best decisions for the most at-risk youth in the state,' department Secretary George L. Sweat said Tuesday. Earlier this year, a state audit recommended replacing three deteriorating juvenile prisons, concluding the buildings' inadequacies risked injury or death to both the juvenile prisoners and staff. Lawmakers have already appropriated money for planning and design of the new facilities, which is expected to be completed by April 2004. |
