Two men escaped from Santa Cruz County Jail in California early Monday while officers watched on a surveillance camera but couldn't catch them. The men, Andrew Keith Brieno, 22, and Rocky Lee Hendrix, 32, are not considered dangerous, said Lt. Gretchen Hurley, the main jail commander. ``But obviously if anybody sees them, call 911,'' she said. The men had been in jail since July. Hendrix, arrested on charges of auto theft, possession of stolen property, burglary and drug possession, walked away from a minimum-security facility in June. Brieno was charged with possession of stolen property and drugs; he was arrested for violating his parole. Both were awaiting sentencing. They were ``inmate workers,'' which gave them access to the jail laundry, where two noisy commercial washers and two dryers are going 24 hours a day, Hurley said. They cut their way out behind the dryers, which are vented to the outside. At about 4:30 a.m. Monday, Hendrix and Brieno set off perimeter alarms, and officers watching the jail monitors saw them climbing the jail's wrought-iron fence topped with spikes bent outward. Hurley estimated it took no more than 30 seconds for officers to reach the spot. But, she added, that's a long time for a motivated runner. |
