Calif. jail breakers caught
By Santa Cruz, Calif., Sentinel
Published: 09/18/2003

Two men who escaped from the Santa Cruz County Jail early Monday are back in custody.
One was captured after a chase early Tuesday morning in Watsonville. The second turned himself in later in the day, despite eluding deputies during the arrest of his cohort.
Investigators Tuesday also arrested two people who allegedly helped the men after their 4:30 a.m. escape Monday from a jail laundry room.
Escapee Rocky Lee Hendrix, 32, of Capitola, was found about 4 a.m. Tuesday. Hendrix attempted to run from deputies, but was caught with help from a police dog, Watsonville police and California Highway Patrol officers, according to Lt. Terry Parker, commander of the Sheriff's Office Investigation Bureau.
His fellow escapee, Andrew Keith Brieno, 22, of Soquel, was believed to have been with him as officers arrived, but he fled and was not found despite an extensive search.
The men face possible felony escape charges on top of the theft and drug charges they were jailed for in July.
Tuesday morning, officers also arrested a second man who was with Hendrix and who they say helped the men after they broke out of jail.
Jeffers Gordon Milburn, 34, of Watsonville, was arrested on suspicion of aiding wanted felons and resisting arrest. Milburn, a landscaper, has 23 arrests since 1987, mostly for drug and theft charges, county records show.
Later Tuesday, deputies also arrested Brieno's sister, Dominique Husted-Terra of Live Oak, on suspicion of aiding wanted felons and conspiracy to commit escape. Investigators say Husted-Terra knew of the men's escape plan and helped them after the break,
Investigators withheld details of the arrest, saying only that 'investigative leads' led them to the Watsonville area.
Sheriff Mark Tracy said it is the jail's first such loss in about 12 years. He said Monday that he planned to review the jail's inmate worker procedures, especially since Hendrix also had walked away from the minimum-security Rountree Lane jail in Watsonville in June before jail officials allowed him to be an inmate worker.
An investigation into how the men escaped is ongoing, deputies say.
