Two inmates at Rutledge State Prison in Columbus, Ga. were served with arrest warrants Tuesday in the murder of another inmate, 57-year-old Bennett Alan Weinberg.
'It was originally reported as a suicide,' said Sheree Lipscomb, director of public information for the Georgia Department of Corrections. 'Investigation showed that that perhaps was not the cause of death.'
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death at Rutledge State Prison, Lipscomb said. The GBI is always called when an inmate is killed, she said.
Vicki Metz, public affairs officer for the GBI, said the agency's Greenville regional office was called to the prison around 8 a.m. Monday to investigate a death.
Weinberg was discovered unconscious around 3:40 a.m., and was later pronounced dead at a hospital, Metz said. Murder warrants were being served to two inmates Tuesday, she said.
The suspects were identified as James Robert Talley, 21, and Michael Snead, 22.
Talley was imprisoned in August 2000 for a 10-year sentence on an armed robbery in Whitfield County. Further information on Snead could not be obtained because he was listed as a first-time offender.
Weinberg of Atlanta was set to be released in December after serving a two-year sentence for a theft in DeKalb County that happened in 1986.
Metz said the department is not releasing information on the cause of death or any known motive in the crime.
Rutledge, at 7175 Manor Road in Columbus, is an all-male state prison that houses 574 inmates, most in their 40s, according to the Department of Corrections Web Site.
Metz said she is not aware of any other slayings at Rutledge this year.
