Two inmates have escaped from the Ridgeland Correctional Institution and may have stolen a car, prison officials say.
Officers were unable to find John Griffin Jr. and Shawn Wiles during an inmate count around 6:45 a.m. Friday, prisons spokesman John Barkley said.
The two had been accounted for about an hour earlier, Barkley said.
Investigators think the men made their way to Ridgeland and stole a Jasper County car, Barkley said.
The vehicle is a 1995 4-door burgundy Buick Century with a South Carolina license tag CG47502.
Griffin, 20, is serving 12 years for second-degree burglary. He is a white male, 5-feet-11, weighing 150 pounds with red or auburn hair and hazel eyes, according to prison records.
Wiles, 24, is serving four years for possession of a stolen vehicle. He is a white male, 5-feet-9, weighing 140 pounds with black hair and hazel eyes.
