A Boston, Mass. man was arraigned in court last Wednesday on conspiracy to commit murder charges. The Boston Channel reported that police say Barry Joyce, 47, was contacted by an inmate at the Billerica House of Correction and allegedly agreed to kill the inmate's wife and a Medford, Mass., police officer who had testified against the inmate. Investigators say Joyce was allegedly paid $25,000 to kill a Medford police officer and the wife of inmate Robert Lamb. The couple were not killed thanks to police work. Lamb is serving 2 1/2 years in prison for domestic assault. The police officer testified against Lamb during the domestic assault case. "This brazen conspiracy strikes at the heart of our justice system. Fortunately, because of the inter-agency cooperation and good old-fashioned police investigative work, (we were able to) prevent this situation to turning tragic," said Middlesex County Sheriff James DiPaola. DiPaola fears events like this may prevent crime victims from reporting the crimes. "If they believe that someone who was incarcerated, was sitting in the house of corrections, actually had the ability to commit this act, this crime, to enter a contract with someone on the street to actually carry out an execution," said DiPaola. The alleged hit man was arrested last Tuesday and arraigned Wednesday. Joyce reportedly had a lengthy police record and was awaiting a trial for a home burglary. According to investigators, when Joyce allegedly failed to deliver on his end of the contact with Lamb, Lamb allegedly hired another killer -- an undercover police officer. "The original hit was for $25,000. He was frustrated and the second agreement was for $5,000. He was looking for a discount," said Medford police Chief Leo Sacco. Police are trying to determine how Lamb got $30,000 to pay for the intended killings. |
