Minn. Politician Out of Prison, On the Job Helping Ex-Convicts

A former Minneapolis City Council member who resigned in 2001 after pleading guilty to extortion is out of prison and working full time to help other ex-convicts stabilize their lives.
Brian Herron began working March 1 as director of Project Re-entry, a new program of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches.
'I was blessed,' Herron said as his appointment was announced. 'I had family and friends who couldn't wait to welcome me home after my release. Most inmates don't have that. And they need it. They need a positive support system to help them avoid the influences that imprisoned them in the first place.'
Herron's job is to help several black churches create support systems for ex-convicts and find funding to expand the program in the future. He remains on supervised release and must check in regularly with a probation officer.
Herron, who began serving his sentence at the federal prison in Duluth on March 7, 2002, admitted taking $10,000 from Selwin Ortega, a grocery store owner, in exchange for promising to help the grocer with regulatory problems.
The Rev. Gary Reierson, president of the Council of Churches, said Herron has done outstanding work in his new job.
He beat out 46 others in a national search to get the job, Reierson said.
