Already in custody on 15 counts of wrongdoing, Justin E. Paulson, 18, may face additional felony charges after allegedly threatening the lives of several Burnett County officials, including Circuit Court Judge Michael Gableman. According to court and Burnett County Sheriff's Department reports, Paulson not only made a verbal threat against Gableman's life, but had a hit list in his Burnett County Jail cell containing names of sheriff's deputies, District Attorney Ken Kutz, Assistant District Attorney Angela Holmstrom, as well as a reference to Gableman. He was charged with Battery or Threat to Judge and 'did intentionally cause bodily harm or threaten to cause bodily harm to the person or family member of any judge,' the complaint reads. The act is a Class C Felony, punishable by a $10,000 fine, six years in prison, or both. On March 9, reports state Paulson attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself in his cell using a makeshift noose of bedding. He was taken into custody and transported to Miller Dawn Hospital in Duluth under Chapter 51 Emergency Detention regulations. The following day, an Adult Detention/Communications Deputy entered Paulson's cell to gather and secure his personal belongings. In the course of doing so, the deputy found a document entitled, 'My (profanity) hit list,' which contained a number of names, including deputies who were involved in his investigation and subsequent arrest, Kutz and Holmstrom. It also contained a person identified only as 'walrus.' There was apparently no signature on the list, but it was initialed 'JP' at the bottom. On a wall next to where the list was secured, additional writing similar to that on the list was found, which was signed in the name of the defendant. The complaint went on to say that while on duty March 18, another jail deputy overheard conversations between Paulson and another inmate over how tough Gableman was. During the course of the conversations, Paulson commented that he really hated the judge. The deputy asked Paulson what name he commonly used to refer to Judge Gableman and Paulson allegedly replied, 'The walrus, the water-headed walrus.' On the same date, another deputy was doing a cell check when they observed Paulson pacing back and forth in his cell. The deputy reportedly asked Paulson if he was having trouble sleeping, to which Paulson answered he was because of all the injustices being done to him. Paulson then allegedly asked the deputy if they knew Judge Gableman's address. The deputy said they did not and began walking away, when Paulson reportedly stated he wanted to know the judge's address so he could 'go there and kill him.' After the complaint was presented March 27, the charges were believed to warrant further prosecution. However, a competency hearing has been requested to determine Paulson's mental condition at the time of the alleged charges. Until he is examined at another facility, no court date will be set for Paulson's next appearance. His $10,000 bail and other conditions remain the same, plus he is to have no contact with Gableman. |
