A former federal prison officer was convicted of helping passengers smuggle drugs off Caribbean cruise ships and could be sentenced to life in prison. Adrienne Harrell's conviction recently was the seventh in an investigation dubbed Operation Smooth Sailing. Prosecutors say the smuggling ring picked up drugs at Jamaican ports and unloaded them in Key West, packed in luggage or taped to couriers' bodies. Seven trips involving 19 people netted more than 180 pounds of cocaine and 40 pounds of hashish, investigators said. Couriers were offered cash or a free cruise by the Jamaican distributors, investigators said. Harrell was convicted of cocaine possession and conspiracy for arranging to meet drug couriers and driving the drugs to Fort Lauderdale. She was fired by the Federal Correctional Institution in Miami because of the case. |
