The sixth and final member of a terrorist cell that operated out of a blue-collar Buffalo, N.Y. suburb was sentenced to nine years in prison last Wednesday, saying he was ready to accept "full responsibility." Sahim Alwan, 31, attended an al-Qaida training camp months before the Sept. 11 attacks and pleaded guilty earlier this year with five other Yemeni-American men in the case. The men, all from the suburb of Lackawanna, reached plea bargains this year that called for sentences between seven and 10 years. "I know I let a lot of people down, including myself and my country," Alwan said. "I'm ready to accept full responsibility." All six had attended an al-Qaida training camp in Afghanistan. Alwan told of two meetings with Osama bin Laden, including one in which bin Laden asked him what Americans thought about martyrdom missions. Authorities said there was no evidence the Lackawanna group was involved in planning or participated in any terrorist act. |
