| Ex-inmate To Become Lawyer |

James Hamm, a parolee who served 18 years in prison for a 1974 murder, could possibly be the first ex-convict to become a lawyer in Arizona. Hamm earned his law degree from the Arizona State University School of Law during the past 9-1/2 years he has been on supervised parole in the state. On December 4, the Arizona Board of Executive Clemency voted 3 to 2 to clear Hamm from his parole status, allowing the ex con to pursue a career in law. Nearly 50 letters acknowledging Hamm's improved behavior and rehabilitation, including one from the judge who originally sentenced him, aided in the clemency board's decision, according to Carrol de Broekert, the board chairman. Hamm, who is currently a paralegal, passed the state bar exam in 1999 and currently owns a criminal justice consulting company with his wife. The company advises inmates and does some lobbying, de Broekert said. |
