Three correctional officers were injured Friday when a group of inmates attacked them in the dining hall of California State Prison in Folsom.
Two of the injured officers were treated at Mercy San Juan Hospital before being released.
The third officer, who had been stabbed five to six times in the back, neck and stomach, was listed in guarded condition late Friday evening with two punctured lungs.
Prison spokesman Lt. Billy Mayfield said one of the officers was searching an inmate in the dining hall at 6:50 a.m. when a group of 11 other inmates attacked with prison-made knives.
The other officers were injured while breaking up the attack with pepper spray and rubber bullets.
There were 35 inmates in the dining hall the time of the assault. The attackers were isolated and the prison was locked down, said Mayfield.
Two of the crude knives were recovered, he said.
No inmates were reported to be injured.
Stephen Green, assistant secretary of the Youth and Adult Correctional Agency, said the inmates were all members of a south state Latino prison gang.
'This was, clearly, a planned attack,' Green said.
But he denied that Friday's attack was part of a statewide campaign against correctional officers by the same group.
'It appears to have been an isolated incident,' said Lance Corcoran, vice president of the California Correctional Peace Officers Association.
'Nine officers are assaulted every day in California (prisons), some in planned attacks, like this one, and others in unplanned attacks,' he said.
