A killer who escaped from a Milwaukee jail by undoing supposedly tamperproof screws with help from his girlfriend was captured in Chicago, authorities said. Acting on an anonymous tip, police found DeCarlos Young, 24, on Chicago's South Side on last week. After a brief chase, he was arrested and identified through his tattoos, police said. Young escaped from the Milwaukee County Jail on Dec. 6, allegedly with the help of girlfriend Albertina Jackson, 25. Jail officials said the pair used a small plastic screwdriver with a special tip to remove the supposedly tamperproof screws that held the window of a visiting booth in place. Young went through the window, changed clothes, put on a wig and walked out with Jackson at the end of visiting hours, authorities said. Jackson, who authorities believe smuggled in the screwdriver, wig and clothes, was arrested last month in Milwaukee and has been charged with aiding the escape. The escape prompted jail officials around the state to change the screws on all security windows, file off their heads or weld them to the windows. Young was convicted in October in the shooting death of a preacher's son and had been awaiting sentencing. The charge carries up to 65 years in prison. |
