Police Storm Thailand Youth Prison

Police firing tear gas canisters stormed a juvenile detention center in southern Thailand early Tuesday to quell a seven-hour riot by hundreds of inmates over prison conditions, officials said.
One officer and one inmate were seriously hurt in the violence that destroyed two buildings at a juvenile correction center in Surat Thani province, about 330 miles south of Bangkok. Five other inmates suffered minor injuries.
About 425 inmates aged between 15 and 18 protested what they called harsh regulations, said Col. Chaiyaporn Wamasiri, provincial police chief. Most of them were being detained on drugs charges.
They were demanding smoking rights, family visits outside prison, and the removal of one warden they said was too strict, Chaiyaporn said.
When authorities did not respond late Monday, the inmates set fire to their living quarters, library and kitchen. Inmates armed with Molotov cocktails, stones, knives and clubs then fought with police mobilized to subdue them, Chaiyaporn said.
After negotiations failed, police fired tear gas into the detention center and about 200 security agents stormed the facility, he said. Police detained and moved 107 inmates to three police stations, Chaiyaporn said. The troublemakers may be charged with causing a riot and damaging state property, he said.
Riots in Thailand's overcrowded prisons, and particularly its juvenile detention centers, are common. The Corrections Department says that jails for adults are filled to three times capacity, mostly because of an upsurge in drug crimes.
