Four years after he was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, John Lipscomb-Bey has been ordered freed after Cook County prosecutors dropped the charge for lack of evidence. The dismissal of the murder charge on Jan. 14 was the final chapter in a case that included improper conduct by police and prosecutors. After Lipscomb-Bey, 41, was convicted in 1997, he appealed and in 2000, the Illinois Appellate Court set aside the conviction because of prosecutorial misconduct. When the case was sent back for retrial, Greenberg filed a motion to suppress evidence, arguing that police had illegally arrested Lipscomb-Bey. After Holt agreed and granted the motion, prosecutors dropped the case and the inmate was freed. |
