Calif. Inmates Brawl Over Super Bowl
By Associated Press
Published: 02/06/2002

About 50 California inmates brawled at a county jail over the Super Bowl, leaving five hurt.
Inmates at Riverside County's downtown Robert Presley Detention Center had watched the game in a lounge Sunday evening. An argument flared after the New England Patriots beat the St. Louis Rams
20-17.
'It was in a housing unit and half of them were for the Rams and half were for the New England
Patriots,' sheriff's Sgt. Shelley Kennedy-Smith said Monday. 'When it was over, two inmates got to discussing it, then they got into a fist fight and the others joined it.'
The most serious injury was a broken nose. No deputies were hurt and there was no damage to the jail.
The jail, which houses up to 1,200 inmates, was locked down through Monday, meaning inmates were confined to their cells.
