| Aircraft Carrying Inmate Missing |

Two state employees and a teen-ager in state custody are missing, and the search will resume this morning for the light plane that was carrying them when it disappeared Tuesday afternoon. Brent Reinke, director of the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections, said the plane was traveling from Idaho Falls to Boise when it was reported missing about 4 p.m. Tuesday. A National Guard helicopter searched the Sawtooth Wilderness around the Boise-Elmore county line and the Sawtooth wilderness area Tuesday night, Elmore County Search and Rescue Director Jim Noland said. Two helicopters and Civil Air Patrol planes are expected to search this morning if conditions allow. Although initial reports suggested the plane had gone down in the Hailey-Stanley area, citizen reports directed searchers to the Sawtooth Wilderness, Noland said. While in that area, he said, a helicopter detected a probable signal from the plane´s emergency transponder. A second helicopter tried to enter the area to confirm and pinpoint the signal, but was turned away by weather conditions, he said. The plane held a juvenile corrections staff member from the Boise area and a 16-year-old boy from Idaho Falls who was being transported to the juvenile corrections center in Nampa, Reinke said. The pilot is an employee of the Idaho Transportation Department Division of Aeronautics. The names of the pilot and passengers were not available Tuesday night. The small prop plane left Idaho Falls at 1:08 p.m. and was supposed to land in Boise around 3 p.m., Reinke said. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike O´Connor said the twin-engine Piper Navajo was last seen on radar about 53 miles northeast of Boise at about 2:45 p.m. Once the plane was reported missing, two Civil Air Patrol planes headed for the Hailey/Stanley area to search for the missing aircraft but had to turn back because of snow and low cloud cover, so the search was suspended until this morning, ITD Spokesman Jeff Stratton said. Stratton said there was no evidence Tuesday night the plane made a distress call before it disappeared from radar. The pilot has been flying for the Division of Aeronautics for eight years, he said. Department officials checked the airports in Hailey, Challis and Stanley as part of the search, but there was no sign of the plane, he said. |
