Woman Recants Murder Allegation Against Former Correctional Officer

A woman has confessed that she lied when she said her estranged husband killed a sheriff's deputy in 1990 a crime for which two other men went to jail.
Gwenda Johnson recanted her story March 13 in a 90-minute interview released Tuesday. She said she fabricated the story to get back at her husband, Andrew Johnson, a former prison officer.
''He's real bad to me, real bad,'' she said. ''He had seven or eight affairs on me ... and I wanted him to look bad to people.''
Gwenda Johnson had earlier said she went with her husband to discard the dismantled revolver used in the killing of Deputy Patrick Behan, according investigation reports.
Her statements sparked a lengthy investigation, in which Andrew Johnson boasted about the slaying to undercover agents posing as drug dealers on Oct. 4, 2001.
Andrew Johnson has since insisted that he only confessed to the murder plot to impress the undercover officers.
Officials announced this month that there wasn't enough evidence to charge Andrew Johnson in Behan's murder, saying they could not independently verify key facts.
Two teen-agers were convicted in the killing. Timothy Brown is serving a life sentence and his lawyers were prepared to use Gwenda Johnson's statements in a bid to free him. Brown's co-defendant, Keith King, served eight years in the case.
