A City Farm officer lost his job earlier this month after sending an inmate on an errand that ended with police officers charging the inmate for drunken driving after a two-car collision. The wreck happened about 10 months after another City Farm inmate walked away from a supervised work detail and stabbed his wife at her Newport News town house. That prompted prison officials to tighten security measures. Mayor Joe Frank characterized the recent incident as a 'business deal' gone awry. The officer wanted the inmate to fix his daughter's car to save on paying for a mechanic, Frank said. He sent the inmate for auto supplies. The officer violated department policy by allowing Inmate William Bradshaw to drive, City Farm Director Virginia Pearce said in a written statement. Bradshaw, 49, was driving eastbound in a 1993 Dodge Colt when he made a left turn and collided with a westbound 1997 Honda Accord. City officials wouldn't say who owned the car the inmate was driving. The crash caused $6,000 worth of damage. Police charged Bradshaw with driving under the influence. Bradshaw was serving a 30-month sentence for a grand larceny conviction. |
