A man arrested for driving under the influence of tranquilizers died early April 6 after he stopped breathing in a Howard County jail cell. Michael Keliher Donahue, 32, of Annapolis, was arrested a day earlier in Ellicott City for driving an unregistered, uninsured vehicle while under the influence of tranquilizers. His brother, John Donahue, later told The Baltimore Sun that he was the real driver, not Michael. Family members said Michael Donahue took a prescribed dosage of clonazepam, a tranquilizer, for his medical problems. Police got a call at about 7:30 p.m. April 5 from a witness who saw a white van driving erratically before it slammed into a curb on Montgomery Road near Old Columbia Pike, said Lisa Myers, Howard County police spokeswoman. Michael Donahue introduced himself as the driver, but he had no driver's license with him. Police said his speech was slurred, and he failed a field sobriety coordination test. A breath test given later showed no alcohol in his system, police said. Police took Michael Donahue to the Southern District police station off Route 216, where he was charged with driving under the influence and other traffic offenses. He couldn't be processed because of his condition, so they put him in a holding cell. The cell held five other men. At some point during the early morning, he stopped breathing. Officers performed CPR before taking him to Howard County General Hospital, where he died. Myers said the investigation is continuing and an autopsy will be performed. |
