Month after month, Andrew Morgan agonized as rescuers searched in vain for his mother's body in the wreckage of the World Trade Center. The torch of grief was passed yesterday to Morgan's pregnant wife after the off-duty city correction officer died in a hail of bullets outside a Brooklyn housing project on April 9. 'He didn't get any closure until the day he died,' said Hyacinth Nelson, Morgan's mother-in-law. 'It was very hard on him.' Morgan, 35, of Canarsie, was sitting in his car outside the Red Hook East project when a lone shooter pumped six bullets into his head and chest about 9p.m. The jail officer, who worked a 6 a.m.-to-2 p.m. shift at Rikers Island, was visiting a female colleague before the shooting, police sources said. Morgan stumbled out of his car and collapsed in a bloody heap on the street as the shooter fled. He was not carrying his service weapon. Investigators want to question the woman's former husband about the killing, although they did not call him a suspect, the sources said. The Correction Officers' Benevolent Association recently posted a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Morgan's killer. 'We urge the death penalty in this horrible tragedy,' said union President Norman Seabrook. He said Morgan was a 'well-liked and respected officer.' |
