| Ohio Gov. Rejects Inmate's Clemency |

The only inmate in the nation under death sentences in three states was denied clemency by Gov. Bob Taft Wednesday and lost a pair of federal appeals. Alton Coleman, 46, was scheduled to be executed Friday. Taft said no court has questioned Coleman's responsibility for the slaying of a suburban Cincinnati woman. Coleman, 46, was condemned to die in Ohio for the 1984 beating death of Marlene Walters, 44. He also was convicted of three other murders in a multistate crime spree and was sentenced to death in Indiana and Illinois. His lawyers in Ohio have argued that Coleman was not given adequate legal representation and that prosecutors chose a racially biased jury at his 1985 trial. The Supreme Court refused to hear two appeals Wednesday; Coleman has a final appeal pending in federal court in Cincinnati. |
