For the second time in less than two months, a mix-up in the Oklahoma County judicial system put a man who should be in jail back on the streets, Eyewitness News 5 reported recently. Jonathan Lucus III, an accused burglar who allegedly targeted laundromats, was released from the Oklahoma County Jail in mid-April because his paperwork didn't reach the district attorney's office in the 10-day period required by state law. Jones was arrested March 27 and his paperwork was due at the DA's office on April 6, which fell on a weekend. Because the charges didn't reach the district attorney's office until April 8, Lucus was free to leave. Tom Jones of Coinmatch told Eyewitness News 5 that he believes Lucus was responsible for stealing coins from 500 of his company's washers and dryers. Last month, accused kidnapper Sampson Guy was released because of a similar error. Police are still searching for him. John Jacobson in the district attorney's office said a mistake was made, but added the county implemented a new system that is helping them keep track of inmates falling under the 10-day release rule. |
