Former Florida County Worker Accused of Having Sex With Inmates

A woman who formerly worked at a Citrus County juvenile detention center has been charged with having sex with two male inmates.
Deritha Barth, 31, surrendered May 1 at the Citrus County Detention Facility after she learned a warrant had been issued for her arrest, said Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokesman Rick Morera. She later was released on $5,000 bail pending a court hearing.
She faces two counts of sexual misconduct, each a second-degree felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison, Morera said.
Barth was fired from her job as a Cypress Creek Correctional Facility youth counselor after co-workers alleged she had sex with a 19-year-old inmate on Jan. 12.
While only one incident was initially reported, Morera said investigators determined that Barth had sex with another Cypress Creek inmate.
Barth, who also goes by the name Deritha Gaskins, has denied the allegations.
According to Florida law, it's illegal for juvenile detention center employees to have sex with an inmate, even if that inmate is 18 or older. Authorities say both inmates in this case were 18 or older.
Cypress Creek administrator Eric Gallon said all employees, including Barth, are made aware of this law during training.
He said the allegations against Barth have not caused any policy changes at the center.
Barth is the second Cypress Creek employee to be charged with having sex with inmates. In 1999, Ruth Ingleston was sentenced to two years in prison for having sex with an 18-year-old inmate.
