Disturbance Reported at Mass. County Jail

Ten jail officers were hurt Friday morning during a disturbance at the Suffolk County Jail in Boston, an officers' union spokesman said.
The disturbance happened on the same day that nearly 60 officers were being laid off at the jail due to budget cuts.
The trouble started in two separate areas of the jail about ten minutes apart around 7:15 a.m., officials said. Six officers were hurt during a fight in an eighth-floor cafeteria, and four others were hurt in a melee on the sixth floor.
Some of the officers suffered back and neck injuries as well as broken bones.
Sheriff's Department spokesman Richard Lombardi says none of the inmates involved requested medical treatment.
The inmates 'basically decided they could take over the place,' said Scott Farmelant, a spokesman for the jail officers' union. He said several officers called him during the disturbance.
The cause of the disturbance was not known. Emergency response teams were sent to the scene.
The jail officers' union said the layoffs are leaving the facility understaffed and unsafe.
Lombardi said officials believe staffing is adequate despite the job cuts.
