Inmates set six mattresses on fire Monday in a protest against the jail recreation schedule, prompting a lockdown for more than an hour, officials said. Eleven inmates barricaded themselves in a section of the McKinley County jail where the fires were started, but the disturbance was quickly quelled, said Sandy Aragon, director of communications at the Gallup-McKinley County 911 center. The inmates came out and the fire was extinguished, Aragon said. Maj. Scott Clark, deputy warden, attributed the disturbance to 'the prisoners being unhappy over not being allowed to have late afternoon recreation.' He said their recreation is scheduled in the morning, but they apparently don't like it at that hour. |
