A capital murder suspect escaped from a county jail bus and allegedly raped an 18-year-old woman before he was caught 13 hours later, authorities said. Derrick Burrell, 36, crawled out of a bus window Monday after being transported from the Tucker Maximum Security Unit at Varner for a court hearing to set a mental evaluation. There were 19 other inmates on the bus. Jailers failed to follow proper procedures during the transport, including applying mandatory leg and arm shackles, Chief Deputy Skipper Polk said. Burrell somehow removed his handcuffs and hid behind seats at the rear of the bus when inmates were unloaded, Polk said. Authorities didn't realize Burrell was missing until an inmate reported that she saw him crawl out the bus window. Burrell is charged in the June 19, 2001, death of Sandra Purtle. Police believe Purtle was robbed and shot to death when Burrell was out on parole for a rape conviction. While on the lam Monday, Burrell went to a friend's house where a woman agreed to give him a ride to a truck stop after he told her he would pay for the gas, said Jim Scott, spokesman for the North Little Rock Police Department. The woman told police that Burrell told her to pull off on a side road from U.S. Highway 70, where he told her he had a gun, raped her and threatened to kill her, Scott said. Burrell took the woman's car and left her on the side of the road, Scott said. He said she walked to a liquor store and called authorities. Burrell was caught Tuesday driving the victim's car. He was charged with second-degree escape, rape and aggravated robbery. The two deputies in charge of transporting the prisoners were back at work Tuesday, but were not allowed to transport prisoners, Polk said. Sheriff's officials declined to release the names of the deputies pending an investigation. |
