A state prisoner was murdered when the doors to 78 cells at the Varner Supermax prison in Arkansas all opened at the same time by accident. 19 inmates left their cells. 51-year-old inmate Jerry L. Ward died of an apparent beating. Another inmate in the cell is suspected of the slaying. A spokeswoman says the doors to the cells in the three-tier block opened about 9:50 a.m. Dec. 22. Spokeswoman Dina Tyler says the cause was either a mechanical failure or because a prison officer pushed the wrong buttons. Tyler says the inmates could not have gotten out of the prison itself. A maintenance man asked the officer to open a door to a mechanical room for a routine check when the cells opened. Tyler says the inmates at the unit are the most difficult to deal with in the system, which has 13,000 inmates. |
