Forty-seven inmates escaped from prison Wednesday by scaling a wall using a wooden pole and a rope made by clothes tied together, news reports said.
The prisoners first cut the iron bars from their cell windows and then scaled the prison wall in Indore, a town in Madhya Pradesh state, Press Trust of India news agency quoted police as saying.
Prison officers were caught napping at the time.
Police later arrested one of the escaped inmates, the report said.
Police have ordered an inquiry into the jail break and suspended three prison wardens.
