Inmate Slashes Wrists in Court

A career criminal pulled out a razor blade and slashed his wrists in a Miami-Dade County courtroom May 23 after being sentenced to 30 years in prison for assaulting two workmen at a gas station.
Shelby Jackson, 45, was being treated at the prison ward at Jackson Memorial Hospital, according to Janelle Hall, a spokeswoman for the county jails.
It's the third time in the past few weeks that Jackson, an inmate being held at a county jail during court proceedings, has made use of a razor blade.
Two weeks ago, Jackson allegedly sent Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Daryl Trawick a threatening letter with a blade in the envelope, according to court officials.
The next day, Trawick ordered Jackson, who has been arrested 40 times since 1984, to appear in court, according to Nan Markowitz, a spokeswoman for the court system.
''He told the judge he had no idea how the razor blade got into the envelope,'' Markowitz said. 'He told the judge he uses razor blades to sharpen his pencils but didn't send [the judge] one.''
Shortly after giving that explanation, Jackson, who acts as his own attorney, opened one of his files in the courtroom and a razor blade fell out.
Hall said the county corrections department has launched an investigation into the incidents. Inmates who are deemed eligible can purchase razor blades at the jail commissary for shaving, Hall said.
''We don't know if he bought them or if he is allowed to buy them,'' she said.
Hall said she did not know if inmates travel through a metal detector en route from the jail to the courthouse.
