Two prisoners were killed as they attempted to escape a jail during Brazil's World Cup match with Turkey on Monday. At least 17 prisoners escaped through a tunnel at about 6:30 a.m., a half-hour after Brazil's first World Cup game began, Sao Paulo police said. During the escape, a group of men opened fire from outside the Provisional Detention Center in Osasco, on this city's outskirts, to distract officers. Police killed two of the escapees and recaptured four others. Prison officials were conducting a recount to confirm the exact number of escapees. With soccer so popular in Brazil, during World Cup matches everything from schools to businesses to traffic usually comes to a near halt. Brazil won the game 2-1. |
