| Oklahoma Inmates Walk Away From Work Detail |

Police are searching for two women who escaped from a prison work detail Tuesday morning. Authorities said Kierstan Jones, 31, and Wendy Evans, 27, walked away from an 8-member litter pickup detail. 'Apparently, they were working in a certain area and they got behind some trees, and then disappeared from there,' Department of Corrections Spokesman Jerry Massie said. Inmates who participate in the work detail are never told where they are going, Massie said, making it unlikely that Jones and Evans planned their escape. The women were last seen near Northwest 23rd Street and Interstate 44. From there, the two women headed east to a Family Dollar, where the escapees allegedly confronted a cashier. Store manager Susan Staggs said the cashier said the two women threatened her life if they told the store manager what was happening. 'Essentially, they just wanted the clothes,' Staggs said. Jones and Evans allegedly stole two pairs of red shorts and two beige shirts, managing to remove sensors that would have identified the clothes as having been stolen. The women never showed a weapon and fled on foot. Staggs said the cashier is fine. 'She's a little shaken, but she's going to be OK,' the store manager said. State officials have alerted Tulsa to the escape in case Jones and Evans head up there, Massie said. Both women were incarcerated at Oklahoma City's Mabel Bassett Correctional Center, a maximum-security facility opened in 1974. They are each serving three-year prison terms for concealing stolen property and attempted larceny. |
