An inmate at a private facility in Mineral Wells died three days after suffering an unreported head injury.
Robert L. Moore didn't like the TV show his fellow inmates had voted to watch at a Mineral Wells private prison on June 2, so he started an argument, Texas Department of Criminal Justice officials said recently.
The dispute evolved into a brawl and eventually cost him his life.
'A disagreement erupted and then it became a fight among some of the offenders,' TDCJ spokesman Larry Todd said. 'Moore was struck, went down to the ground, striking the back of his head on the concrete floor.'
Neither Moore nor the other inmates reported the fight.
Moore went to the infirmary a day later, saying he had fallen.
Prison officials said he had bruises under both eyes and a cut on his lip. He was given pain medication and sent back to his cell.
On June 4, Moore became incoherent as he complained of a head injury. He was taken to Palo Pinto General Hospital and later transferred to Harris Methodist Fort Worth.
On June 5, Moore was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office preliminarily ruled the death a homicide.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice interviewed other inmates who confirmed that there were two brief fights between Moore and another inmate. The information about the fight will be presented to a special prosecutor and taken before a grand jury. It isn't clear whether the inmate will face criminal charges, Todd said.
