| Prisoners Set to Play in Mock 'World Cup' |

Japan faces Nigeria this week in the opening game of a 'World Cup' competition. The venue: a prison. The players: jailbirds from among some 50 nationalities serving time in Thailand. The mock World Cup event, with eight teams taking part, is being staged to ease tensions at the overcrowded prison on Bangkok's outskirts, according to Natee Chitsawang, deputy director-general of the Corrections Department. Natee said recently that the two-week tournament will kick off June 13 and coincide with the real World Cup event being held in South Korea and Japan. France will take on Argentina the same day. Other teams, each consisting of seven players, include Germany, Brazil, England and Thailand. More than 1,300 inmates at Klongprem Prison are foreigners, including 132 Nigerians, most of them jailed for drug offenses. There are 13 Britons, six Germans, six Dutch, four Italians, three French and three Swiss prisoners, and two each from Spain and the United States. Except Nigeria and Thailand, the other teams will comprise players of more than one nationality because there aren't enough prisoners to make up complete national teams. The matches will be played on a pitch half the size of a regulation soccer field within the walls of the prison. The winning team will be awarded a replica trophy of 2002 World Cup, Natee says. The prisoners are allowed to watch live broadcasts of the May 31-June 30 World Cup tournament,. Natee said the tournament is part of efforts by prison officials to reduce tension and stress caused by overcrowding in jails. Nearly 300,000 prisoners are lodged in 134 jails nationwide, which were designed to hold 100,000. |
