Ten asylum seekers remained on the run July 1, three days after supporters helped them break out of a remote Australian detention center, police said. Police accused the supporters of recklessly leaving some of the escaped immigrants without food in the desert, where temperatures have plunged below freezing for the last three nights. 'It is pretty silly to break them out and then just dump them,' South Australian Police spokesman Colin Haigh said. The 10 remaining fugitives, including two children, were among 35 Afghans, Iranians and Iraqis who broke out of the detention camp in Woomera on June 27. Refugee activists aided their escape by using cars to haul down fences surrounding the former missile testing base. All of those who broke out of Woomera had had their asylum applications rejected and were being held pending the outcome of appeals, the immigration department has said. Meanwhile, a hunger strike by asylum seekers in the Woomera camp entered its eighth day. The Immigration Department said 87 of the 179 people being held at Woomera were on strike. Two adults had stitched their lips together as part of the protest. |
