An off-duty correction officer was shot on Sunday night in front of a crowd of 200 horrified spectators at a soccer field in Brooklyn. The officer, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, was watching a soccer game at a field at Linden Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue in East New York at about 9:30 p.m. when he and another spectator began arguing, authorities said. Three shots rang out as spectators ducked and ran for cover. The officer was hit in the stomach. The gunman dropped a bag he was carrying and ran. Cops fanned out through the neighborhood with police dogs searching for him. The 38-year-old officer, who works on Rikers Island, was taken to Brookdale Hospital in stable condition. His injuries were not considered life-threatening. Police said the shooting did not appear to have anything to do with his job. They were interviewing witnesses early today. |
