Five deputies are facing disciplinary charges for horseplay at the Onondaga County (NY) jail, according to Sheriff Kevin Walsh. One deputy was injured and the other four were demoted for their playacting of an ''inmate takedown,'' done to punish the deputy who had broken a sprinkler head by mistake. On July 1, a lieutenant was demoted to sergeant and three sergeants were demoted to deputy, said Chief Custody Deputy Anthony Callisto. ''It was a joke that turned bad,'' Callisto recently told The Post-Standard in Syracuse. ''You don't expect people not to have a sense of humor. It's a workplace like any other. But obviously when you get into anything physical like that, you cross the line. It's unacceptable behavior.'' Callisto declined to disclose the deputy's injury or the names of the officers involved. The incident began when the deputy accidentally broke a ceiling sprinkler with a mop handle May 25, flooding the floor, Callisto said. Whenever an inmate intentionally breaks a sprinkler, he or she must be immobilized and moved by a team of specially trained deputies, he said. The lieutenant and three sergeants joked that they'd have to move the deputy the same way, Callisto said. They got a video camera to record the move and later gave the videotape to the deputy to save for his retirement party, Callisto said. In the videotape, the other officers put the deputy face-down on the floor, handcuff him and put him in an emergency restraint belt. They lift him off the floor and walk him out into a corridor. The deputy appears to be going along with it. Walsh said disciplinary measures probably will include unpaid time off. |
