A Vermilion, Ohio, woman threatened to file a lawsuit after she claims she was put in an isolation cell with a male prisoner for an entire day at the Lorain County Jail. WEWS reported that according to the Lorain County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department, the alleged male prisoner is a she and not a he. Linda Morris, 28, was serving a 30-day sentence and was placed in a jail cell with Carla Brenner, 45. But Morris claims that Brenner is a man -- not a woman. Lorain County Jail Capt. John Reiber said that jail doctors thoroughly checked Brenner, who was transferred from a women's prison in Illinois, and said that Brenner is indeed a woman. '(But) there was some question,' he said. 'I can't get specific due to privacy issues. Initially, there (were gender questions).' Morris told jail officials there was no question, and that while in her cell, she saw that Brenner had male sex organs. 'They should have checked it more thoroughly,' said Shelia Reynolds, Morris' next-door neighbor. Reynolds says the incident is shocking and said she understands why Brenner is thinking about filing a lawsuit against the county for the alleged duress she suffered while being forced into a cell with Brenner. 'When you see a female and a male, it should have been remedied right there,' Reynolds said. '[An officer] should have taken care of the situation.' Meanwhile, as a result of the complaint, Brenner is being kept in a separate cell at the Lorain County Jail, as jail officials work out the he/she controversy. Morris is no longer in jail. Brenner, however, will be behind bars for at least three more years while serving time on felony convictions. |
