Two teen-agers were arrested Friday on suspicion they were in a group of men who allegedly assaulted and shot an off-duty corrections officer after a soccer game, police said.
Rikers Island Correction Officer Carlos Engleton, 37, of the Bronx, was in stable condition Saturday after surgery for a gunshot wound, according to Brookdale Hospital spokesman Ole Pedersen.
Authorities said Engleton was punched and shot after arguing with four men near Linden Park in the Bronx last Sunday.
Tyshawn Pittman, 16, of Brooklyn, and a 14-year-old, whose name could not be released because of his age, were both accused of being involved in the attack.
Police spokesman Sgt. Vito Marrano said it was not immediately clear what their roles in the incident may have been.
They were both arrested Friday on charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, Marrano said.
The teen-agers are the third and fourth people to be arrested in connection with the shooting. Kamel Reese, 16, and Ronell Peterkin, 22, are also accused of taking part in the attack. Peterkin was accused of firing the bullet that wounded Engleton.
