| Former N.Y. Corrections Officer Sentenced for Sex with Inmate |

A former corrections officer accused of having sex with an inmate and impregnating her was sentenced to one to three years in state prison for third-degree rape, officials said. Dean Schmidt, 45, was an officer in the Albion Correctional Facility. The inmate later had an abortion, District Attorney Joseph Cardone said. Schmidt apologized for his actions. Schmidt, of Clarence, 15 miles northeast of Buffalo, was also sentenced Friday in Orleans County court to one year for official misconduct. Judge James Punch said the case justified a state statute making sexual relations between an officer and an inmate a felony, even if it was consensual. |
